A Typical Napro Diagnostic Evaluation

First Appt: a comprehensive medical history will be taken. Most NaPro providers will provide you with education about a woman's normal healthy reproductive cycle. Most often CD3 lab orders will be placed (ie: blood tests to be done on the 3rd day of your menstrual cycle) and a CD5 ultrasound order will be placed.

Many providers will recommend you begin to chart your menstrual cycles using the Creighton Model System (CrMS). In order to learn the CrMS method, you will need to choose a Fertility Care Practitioner (FCP), who has undergone rigorous and extensive training to learn to teach you this specific method of NFP. There are many FCPs providing services. Sharon can help you located someone. A few FCPs who frequently worked with Sharon in te past can be found by clicking the "Fertility Care Practitioner Webpage" button below.

Second Appt:  You will be asked to return to see the provider for a follow-up appointment to review the results of your CD3 laboratory test and your CD5 ultrasound. The provider will also want to review your Creighton Model System (CrMS ) chart to look for specific biomarkers which will help make a diagnosis.

Be sure to always add the length of your post-peak phase and your mucus cycle score (MCS) to the R-hand margin of your CrMS chart. Your Fertility Care Practitioner (FCP) will calculate your MCS for you.

Your provider may be ask you to begin some supplements and/or medications. He/she will more than likely discuss drawing hormone panels. There are two general types of NaPro panels:

  • Peri ovulatory estradiol panel: start on CD8, go to the lab EOD for an estradiol draw, until you have one draw post-peak.
  • Post-Peak estradiol and progesterone panel: P+3, 5, 7, 9, and 11. See Handout #3 on the the Patient Handout webpage.

Typically, hormone panels require 2 mos of CrMS charting AND the patient must be able to confidently identify her Peak day.

Third Appt: Next, you will be asked return for a visit to review the results of your hormone panels as well as the biomarkers on your CrMS chart. Most often, by this time the NaPro provider  will have made one or more more diagnoses to identify the root cause of your symptoms. A  treatment plan will be discussed and a joint-decision will be made how to proceed.

Follow Up Appts: You will return to the office for routine follow up appts. During this time, your provider will assess your progress to ensure you are responding well to the management plan. Depending on the individual patient and your individual diagnoses, you may require ongoing  monitoring via laboratory tests and/or imaging.
